Small Learning Communities

Roybal boasts four successful small learning communities (SLCs) and the Roybal Film and Television Magnet.

Despite their individual SLC or Magnet emphases, all of these communities contribute to the realization of a

shared Mission, Vision, and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).

Aligned with LAUSD's College and Career Readiness A-G initiative, Roybal's curriculum meets California

State University A-G requirements, with thematic options for each Small Learning Community (SLC). Specific

coursework and partnerships for each SLC are detailed, emphasizing practical skills, industry connections, and

college readiness. The SLC model at Roybal aims to create a more personalized learning atmosphere to better

cater to students' needs. The existing SLCs are briefly outlined below:

Academy for Educational Empowerment (AEE): Focuses on fostering student interest and skills in

Medicine and Law.

Computer Science Academy (CSA): Promotes a rigorous academic and computer-oriented curriculum

for college and career preparation.

Social Work and Child Development (SWCD), formerly International School of Languages (ISOL):

Prepares students for careers in social work, school psychology, or mental health support.

BAM! (Business, Artivism, and Management): Develops young leaders in sustainability, managerial

arts, business, and finance.

Film and Television Magnet (FTVM): Builds a more inclusive pipeline of historically underrepresented,

college and career ready students interested in the film and television industries by linking core content

curriculum to film and television themes and offering elective pathways in pre-production, technical and

post production.
