Colleges, employers, and community leaders are looking for SWCD students!
Join the SWCD family today!

Our mission as SWCD is to support students on their journey as civic leaders who uplift and serve their communities. Through advisory, clubs, community service, and field trips to colleges across southern California, SWCD students not only prepare to achieve their goals but also actively engage in creating change in the world around them now. Our students are the young leaders that universities and careers seek, because they use their own languages, cultures, and knowledge to empower themselves and those around them to make the world a better place.

As an academy, we offer Roybal students the opportunity to earn a certificate in Child Development through our partnership with Los Angeles City College. Students earn this certificate by taking LACC classes for college credit and volunteering at Betty Placensia Elementary and STEAM Magnet where they apply their learning by working the students and teachers.

Alumni can use this coursework for transfer credit in college and pursue a job in early education. Students may also take AP Psychology to help further their interests and potentially earn college credit for an introductory psychology class. We also help students learn more about careers in social work, psychology, and education.

SWCD leads Roybal's Community Service Engagement program, which is one way students fulfill their LAUSD Service Learning Requirement. Students volunteer at a variety of community organizations and in unique opportunities on campus, co-hosted by SWCD and Titans United in Community Service (TUCS). SWCD students who go above and beyond the minimum annual community service expectations receive special honors at graduation. Students may log their Community Service hours using this form (click to download).
