Course Overview & Goals

The Advanced Placement Biology course is designed to allow high school students to pursue college-level introductory biology course while attending high school. It aims to deepen students understanding of the conceptual framework for modern biology which was studied by students in their previous Biology course. As the course focuses on underlying big ideas and concepts of biology, students should be able to synthesize, apply and adopt critical thinking on its relevance to current societal and environmental issues.

As the College Board currently revised and refocus the AP Biology curriculum for 2019. The course hopes to move out of the traditional “content coverage” model of instruction to one that focuses on four big ideas and the enduring conceptual understandings and content that support these core ideas. AP required laboratory experiments and supporting activities are tailored that would allow students to engage in the practice of science, develop questions and hypotheses, state scientific, inquiry-based problems and design experiment  that provide evidence and explanations. It is for these goals that laboratory investigations accounts for 25% of instructional time. (CR7)*

This syllabus is aligned with the revised AP Biology Course & Exam Description Curriculum Framework published by the College Board, effective Fall 2019. Topics and contents are organized around underlying principles called big ideas that bound the core scientific principles, theories and processes of living organisms and biological systems. (CR2) Statements of enduring understanding, which explains the core concepts students should understand support the four big ideas. Each enduring understanding is followed by statements of essential knowledge from which concepts and topics in the syllabus are anchored.
